ants marching

by ~prufock

fine lines dug in the dirt,
intricate maps, mazes
tunneled through the earth.
these small creatures run like blood
through veins, their caverns.
march in rank through city streets
to dig, or fight, or hunt.
earth appears to ripple,
ants clawing through dirt
to bring food to the queen.
one is crushed beneath a child's thumb,
is never mourned,
is never missed.

one of a lot of nature-related poems that i wrote during my stint in Creative Writing class. i never presented this in class, but i included it in my portfolio. written late in the semester, the idea was kicking around for a while.

nature often mimics the "human world," or at least relates to it. people sometimes seem to me like ants: kind of faceless and stuck in a hectic cycle.

in that vein, this could be a diptic with an old piece i wrote 2 years ago, maybe i'll post it sometime. it wasn't that good.

[Edited this to take the comma out after 'mazes.' it just didn't belong.]

note to myself: delete comma after 'mazes.'

great descriptions. they really paint a picture well.
only thing i'd change is i'd remove the word maps to improve the flow of those two sentences. but it's fine with maps stuck in there as well :) (Smile)
Peace
